Upgrading Midnight Commander (mc)

Compilation of Midnight Commander (mc) from ports usually goes with no issues. But when it comes to installing port it may actually get stuck on installation of FISH (FIles transferred over SHell protocol). At that point if you are not quick enough it will kill your box or at least make it very difficult to operate further.

Viewing PDFs in Chromium on Linux Mint

Since the PDF library is not a free software, it isn’t included with the distribution of Chromium.

To get PDF support in Chromium:

  1. download the appropriate DEB package for your system from https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/
  2. using the archive manager, extract libpdf.so from /opt/google/chrome/
  3. copy that file into /usr/lib/chromium-browser/ (remember you have to root or use sudo)
  4. restart Chromium if you have it
